Key Match-ups and Predictions for Week 2 of the College Football Season

Key matchups for the weekend:

(12) Florida @ Miami (FL)

Miami (FL) OT Seantrel Henderson vs UF DL Dominique Easley

  • I’m not sure how often they’ll face off, as Easley primarily plays inside as a 3 technique, and Henderson bounces between the tackle positions (it’s weird and I don’t know why they do this). Ultimately whoever is protecting QB Stephen Morris needs to be ready. The Gators defense is fierce and has a talented down four and secondary. The Hurricanes don’t have much outside talent, so RB Duke Johnson will be relied upon early and often.

Prediction: Florida 20 Miami 14

(6) South Carolina @ (11) Georgia

South Carolina DEs Jadeveon Clowney and Chaz Sutton vs Georgia OT Kenarious Gates

  • Clemson DE Vic Beasley beat Kenarious Gates regularly last weekend, and Sutton is a similar player. With violent hands and quick first step, whoever is lines up on Gates should have a good night. The Bulldogs will need to rely on star RBs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall to be most effective.

Prediction: South Carolina 24 Georgia 17

(14) Notre Dame @ (17) Michigan

Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt vs Michigan OTs Taylor Lewan and Michael Schofield

  • Tuitt generally plays LDE, so he’ll probably face Schofield more often. He’ll have the power advantage there, but if he lines up over Lewan, it’ll be a fun battle. Both are top 15 overall players and this is a rare elite matchup.

Prediction: Michigan 27 Notre Dame 17

San Jose St @ (5) Stanford

San Jose St QB David Fales vs Stanford D

  • Obviously, all eyes are on Fales this game as he’s undermanned and facing a tough opponent. Fales has serious questions about his arm strength, but he has superb accuracy and this is the stage he needs to show his overall arm talent off. I don’t expect this to be close in the end, but Fales and WR Noel Grigsby could keep it interesting.

Prediction: Stanford 45 San Jose St 20
